44  Sūrat adh Dhukān ~ the Smoke

In the name of God the Compassionate the Merciful                                     0

Ḥa  Mīm                                                                                                          1

By the clear book,                                                                                           2

Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night.                                                   3

Truly, We are warning.

In it is made distinct every wise matter,                                                          4

A command from Us.                                                                                      5

Surely, We are sending

A mercy from your Rabb.                                                                                6

Truly, He is the Hearer, the Knower,

The Lord of the heavens and the earth,                                                           7

And what is between both of them,

If you are certain.

There is no god but He.                                                                                    8

He gives life and He causes death,

Your Rabb, the Lord of your forefathers.

Yet they are playing in doubt.                                                                          9

So then, watch for the day when the sky will bring visible smoke,               10

Enveloping the people.                                                                                   11

This is a painful punishment.

Our Lord, remove the chastisement from us.                                                 12

Truly, we are believers.

How is it there is a reminder for them,                                                           13

When certainly there came to them a clear messenger?

Then they turned away from him and said:                                                    14

One [who is] taught, a madman.

Indeed, We will remove the punishment a little.                                            15

Surely, you will revert.

On the day We will seize [with] the greatest seizure,                                    16

Indeed, We will take retribution.

And certainly, We tried the people of Pharaoh before them,                         17

And a noble messenger came to them,

[Saying]:  Deliver to me the servants of God.                                                18

Verily, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

And:  Do not elevate yourselves against Allāh.                                             19

Truly, I have come to you with a clear authority.

And indeed, I seek refuge with my Rabb and your Rabb,                             20

Lest you stone me.

And if you do not believe me, then leave me alone.                                      21

So he called his Lord:  These are a criminal folk.                                          22

So then, set out with My servants by night.                                                    23

Surely you will be pursued.

And leave the sea tranquil.                                                                              24

Surely they are an army drowned.

How many gardens and springs did they leave behind,                                  25

And sown crops and noble places,                                                                  26

And pleasant things in which they used to take delight?                                27

Like that We bequeathed it to another people.                                                28

And not heaven nor earth wept for them,                                                       29

And they were not given reprieve.

And certainly, We saved the children of Israel                                               30

From humiliating punishment

From Pharaoh.                                                                                                31

Indeed, he was arrogant among the transgressors.

Surely We chose them by [Our] knowledge over the worlds.                        32

And We gave them of the signs that in it was a clear trial.                            33

Indeed, these ones, they surely say:                                                                34

There is not but our first death in it, and we shall not be resurrected.            35

Then bring [back] our forefathers if you are truthful.                                    36

Are they better, or are the people of Tubba‘ and those before them?             37

We destroyed them, indeed, they were criminals.

And We did not create the heavens and the earth,                                          38

And what is between them, in play.

We did not create them both except in truth.                                                  39

And yet, most of them do not know.

Indeed, the day of the judgment                                                                     40

Is a time appointed for them all together,

A day when a relative cannot avail anything for a relative.                           41

And they will not be helped,

Except on whom Allāh bestows mercy.                                                         42

Surely Allāh is the Almighty, the Merciful.

Indeed, the tree of the zaqqūm                                                                       43

Is the food of sinners.                                                                                     44

Like a molten metal it boils in their bellies,                                                   45

Like the boiling of scalding water.                                                                 46

Seize him and drag him into the midst of the inferno,                                   47

Then pour above his head from the punishment of scalding water.               48

Taste!  Indeed, you, you are the mighty, the noble.                                        49

Indeed, this is that about which you used to doubt.                                        50

Surely the virtuous will be in a safe secure place,                                          51

In gardens and springs,                                                                                   52

Wearing garments of silk and brocade, face to face.                                      53

Thus it is.                                                                                                        54

And We will marry them to companions with large bright eyes.                   55

There they will call for every trustworthy fruit.

They will not taste death there except the first death.                                    56

And He will save them from the punishment of the inferno,

A bounty from your Lord.                                                                               57

That is the great success.

So indeed, We have made it easy in your tongue that they take heed.           58

So be vigilant, surely they are vigilant.                                                          59
