13 Sūrat ar Ra‘d ~ the Thunder
In the name of God the Compassionate the Merciful 0
Alif Lām Mīm Ra 1
These are the verses of the book.
And that which has been sent down from your Rabb is the truth,
But most of mankind does not believe.
Allāh is the One Who raised the heavens without pillars that you see. 2
He mounted the throne,
And subjected the sun and the moon,
Each proceeding for a designated term.
He arranges the matter, He details the signs,
So that you may have certainty in the meeting with your Rabb.
And He is the One Who extended the earth, 3
And put in it firm mountains and rivers,
And of all of the fruits in it He made two mates.
He covers the night with the day.
Indeed, in that surely are signs for a people who reflect.
And in the earth are neighboring tracts and gardens of grapevines, 4
And crops and date palms, clones from a single root,
And not from a single root, watered with one water,
But We bestow some of them over others in fruit.
Indeed, in that surely are signs for a people who reason.
And if you are amazed, then amazing is their saying: 5
When we are dust, will we be in a new creation?
Those are the ones who disbelieved in their Rabb,
And those, the shackles are on their necks,
And those are the companions of the fire.
They abide in it forever.
And they ask you to hasten the evil before the good. 6
And surely exemplary punishments have occurred before them.
And indeed, your Rabb is certainly the source of forgiveness for humanity
For their iniquity, and indeed your Rabb is severe in punishment.
And those who disbelieved say: 7
Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Rabb?
You are only a warner.
And for every people is a guide.
Allāh knows what every female bears, 8
And what the wombs lose or increase,
And everything with Him is in proportion,
Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, 9
The Great, the Exalted.
Equal to Him from you is who conceals speech, 10
And who publicizes it,
And one who is hidden by night or conspicuous by day.
For him are followers in front of him and behind him, 11
Guarding him by the command of God.
Indeed, God does not change the condition of a people,
Until they change what is in themselves.
And when God wills evil for a people,
Then there is no deflecting it,
And not any protector for them besides Him.
He is the One Who shows you lightning, a fear and a longing, 12
And raises the heavy clouds.
And the thunder glorifies with praise of Him, 13
And the angels in fear of Him.
And He sends thunderbolts and strikes with them whom He wills,
Yet they dispute about God.
And He is severe in barreness.
To Him is the call of truth, 14
And those whom they invoke besides Him do not respond,
Except like one who extends his hands towards water to reach his mouth,
But does not reach it.
And the supplication of the faithless is not but in error.
And to Allāh prostrates whoever is in the heavens and the earth, 15
Willingly or by compulsion,
And their shadows in the mornings and the evenings.
Say: Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth? 16
Say: God.
Say: Have you then take protectors besides Him?
They have no power of themselves to benefit nor to harm.
Say: Are the blind and the seeing equal?
Or are the shadows and the light equal?
Or do they attribute to God partners who created like His creation
So that the creation seemed similar to them?
Say: God is the Creator of everything,
And He is the One, the Prevailing.
He sends down water from the sky, 17
So the valleys flow according to their capacity,
And the flood carries a rising foam
And from what they heat over the fire,
Seeking to make ornaments or utensils, a foam like it.
Like that God sets forth truth and falsehood.
Then, as for the foam it goes away useless,
And as for what benefits humanity remains in the earth.
Thus God sets forth parables.
For those who respond to their Lord is the beautiful. 18
And for those who did not respond to Him,
If they had all that is in the earth, and the like of it with it,
Surely they would offer it as ransom.
Those ones, for them is a terrible reckoning.
And their abode is hell, and wretched is the resting place.
Then is one who knows that what has been revealed to you 19
From your Lord is the truth like one who is blind?
Only ones of understanding take heed.
Those who fulfill the covenant of God and do not break the agreement, 20
And those who join what God has commanded to be joined, 21
And fear their Lord and are afraid of the harm of the reckoning,
And those who are patient seeking the face of their Lord, 22
And establish the prayer and spend from what We have provided them,
Secretly and publicly,
And repel evil with good,
Those ones, for them is the final home.
Gardens of permanent residence, 23
They shall enter them, whoever is virtuous
Among their ancestors and their mates and their descendants.
And the angels shall enter upon them from every gate.
Peace be upon you for what you patiently endured, 24
And excellent is the ultimate home.
And those who break the covenant of God after binding it, 25
And sever what God has commanded to be joined,
And spread corruption in the earth,
Those, for them is the curse,
And a wretched home.
God extends provision for whom He wills, and restricts. 26
And they rejoice in the life of the world.
And to the hereafter the life of the world is not but an enjoyment.
And those who disbelieve say: 27
Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Lord?
Say: Indeed, God lets go astray whom He wills,
And guides to Him whoever turns back,
Those who have faith, 28
And whose hearts are tranquil in the remembrance of God.
No doubt, hearts are tranquil in the remembrance of God.
Those who had faith and did virtuous deeds, 29
Blessedness is for them,
And a beautiful place of return.
Thus We have sent you to a people, 30
Before whom peoples have certainly passed away,
So you may recite to them what We revealed to you,
While they disbelieve in the Most Compassionate.
Say: He is my Lord. There is no god but He.
Upon Him I put my trust and to Him is my return.
And if that was a recitation by which mountains could be moved, 31
Or by it the earth could be cloven,
Or by it the dead could be made to speak,
But no, all command belongs to God.
Then do those who have faith not know that if God had willed,
Surely He would have guided all of mankind?
And those who disbelieved will not cease to be struck for what they did,
A calamity,
Or it settles near their homes until the promise of God comes.
And indeed, God will not fail in the promise.
And certainly, messengers were mocked before you, 32
But I granted respite to those who disbelieved,
Then I seized them.
And how was My penalty?
Is then is He Who is a sustainer of every soul for what it has earned? 33
Yet they ascribe partners to God.
Say: Name them.
Or do you inform Him of what He knows not in the earth,
Or of the appearance of words?
No, their plotting is made attractive to those who disbelieve.
And they are diverted from the path.
And whomever God lets go astray, then there is not for him any guide.
For them is a punishment in the life of the world. 34
And surely the punishment of the hereafter is more difficult.
And there is not any defender for them against God.
The parable of the garden which is promised to the God conscious, 35
From beneath it flow rivers,
Its food is everlasting, and its shade.
This is the end of those who are pious.
And the end of the faithless is fire.
And those to whom We have given the book, 36
Rejoice at what has been sent down to you.
But among the groups who deny a part of it, say:
I have been commanded that I serve only God,
And I not associate partners with Him.
To Him I call and to Him is my return.
And thus We have revealed it a judgement in Arabic. 37
And if you follow their desires after what came to you of knowledge,
There is not for you against God any protector and no defender.
And certainly We sent messengers before you, 38
And We made for them wives and descendants.
And it was not for a messenger that he come with a sign,
Except by the leave of God.
For everything is a time decreed.
God eliminates and confirms what He wills. 39
And with Him is the mother of the book.
And whether We show you a part of what We promised them, 40
Or We cause you to die,
Then on you is only the conveyance,
And on Us is the reckoning.
Did they not see that We come to the land decreasing it from its borders? 41
And God judges.
There is no adjuster of His judgement,
And He is the Swiftest of Reckoning.
And certainly those who were before them plotted, 42
But to God belongs the plot entirely.
He knows what every soul earns,
And the faithless will know whose is the ultimate home.
And say those who disbelieve: You are not a messenger. 43
Say: Sufficient is God as witness between me and you,
And whoever has knowledge of the book.
